The IIT Bombay-Ohio State Frontier Science and Engineering Research Center on March 7 announced its requests for proposals (RFP) for the third round of Frontier Center Scholar Grants.

The Frontier Center builds on complementary research strengths of The Ohio State University and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay to impact society through science and technology advancements. The Frontier Center Scholars Program provides seed funding for cutting-edge research projects related to materials and their applications to systems.

This year, the Frontier Center is thrilled to expand the scope and impact of its Research Scholar program. The partnering principal investigators are now encouraged to support two doctoral students, one at each institution, who will each be supported for a semester of research at the partner university. These expanded teams will be awarded additional time and additional funding support.

These students, Frontier Scholars, will spend approximately one semester working closely with PIs while conducting research at the partnering institution. Scholars collaborating abroad receive travel support, accommodation, and living expenses for their four- to six-month stay at the host university.

The Frontier Center focuses on research areas that are strengths of both institutions and represent areas of strategic growth for binational collaborations. The focus areas are renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, electronics, photonics, emergent materials, and quantum information and technology. Supported research areas through the program continue to expand in response to societal needs and research discoveries.

Last year, eight collaborative research teams were awarded more than $200,000 in funding through the second round of Frontier Center Scholar Grants. Those teams are now conducting research across a wide range of areas, from physics and metallurgical engineering to energy science.
