Ohio State welding engineering student Sydney Coates works on a project in the lab while receiving instruction from professor Carolin Fink, who was communicating with her via video chat on a phone.

Carolin Fink, an assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering’s welding engineering program, was featured in The Ohio State University’s series “Guidance through a pandemic.”

The article focuses on Fink, hired through the IMR-operated Materials and Manufacturing for Sustainability Discovery Theme program, and her efforts as a mentor to encourage students to continue discovering opportunities during the coronavirus pandemic.

“I got into the field because I had a role model,” Fink said. “But mentors can be even more effective, not just in bringing in new populations to certain fields but just by pointing out there are opportunities even though you don’t see anyone who looks like you. But why wouldn’t there be an opportunity there? That’s where mentorship can be important.”

Fink was also recently featured in “Reflections,” a Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) series documenting how students, staff and faculty members adapted and overcame the many challenges posed in Autumn 2020.

In Autumn 2020, she taught WE4112 and WE7112 virtually to undergraduate, graduate and distance students. Fink discussed her experiences retaining student engagement in a virtual setting.
