Ohio State Materials and Manufacturing Conference

The Institute for Materials and Manufacturing Research (IMR) is excited to announce the 2023 Ohio State Materials & Manufacturing Conference.

Online registration deadline for attendees is May 4, 2023. On-site registration will be available at the event table at Fawcett Center.

When:
May 9-11, 2023

Where:
The Fawcett Center
2400 Olentangy River Rd.

The conference, formerly OSU Materials Week, will showcase materials-allied research at The Ohio State University in a series of in-person celebrations that will welcome faculty, professional researchers and students from around the world. Professors, researchers and students are invited to join us for the three-day event, which includes plenary sessions, technical talks and poster sessions covering a spectrum of materials-allied research.

The 13th annual conference hosted by Ohio State’s Institute for Materials Research will feature cross-cutting and breakout sessions focusing on the latest advances in materials and manufacturing research and innovation, student poster sessions, and the popular Three Minute Thesis competition.

Conference topics include advanced semiconductor materials and devices, manufacturing of future battery technologies, emergent materials and quantum phenomena, manufacturing in space, among other cutting-edge areas that are defining the next generation of materials and manufacturing. Keynote speaker Dr. Carolyn Duran, VP of Components Research at Intel and the previous president of the Materials Research Society, will discuss advanced materials research at Intel.

2023 MMC Event Agenda

About the Ohio State Materials & Manufacturing Conference

For more than a decade, IMR has dedicated one week in May to celebrate the innovative research and accomplishments of the materials community at The Ohio State University.

Each year, IMR solicits topics of interest from faculty to be featured throughout the conference to ensure the range of research areas covered each year reflects the breadth of the materials community at the university, while always being different.

IMR welcomes researchers from academia, industry and government labs, as well as students and the greater community, to come together, learn, and create connections and collaborations at this virtual event series.

Did you miss IMR’s 12th annual Materials Week? No worries! The event had nearly one thousand visits during its series of research presentations, student-led virtual lab tours, and other interactive sessions.

3MT Three Minute Thesis logo

Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition challenges master’s and doctoral students to take the stage and effectively communicate a distilled, compelling thesis and its significance in just three minutes. No props. No elaborate electronic media assistance. No dumbing it down. Are you up for it? Free conference registration for participating students.

3MT registration is closed.

Mechanical and aerospace engineering doctoral student Lalith Rao’s 3MT presentation is featured below. He won the 2019 spirit award for presenting “development of high-energy cathodes for li-ion batteries.” his advisors are mae assistant professor Jung-hyun Kim and IMR director of innovation Jay Sayre, who also serves as adjunct associate professor in materials science and engineering.

Student Poster Sessions

During our last in-person poster sessions, about one hundred graduate students at Ohio State shared their work and received feedback from professors and researchers of varying disciplines. Free conference registration for participating students. The top ten presenters this year will be awarded at IMR’s closing ceremony.

Poster registration is closed.

Poster Judges Welcome

Registration fees will also be waived for faculty, technical staff and industry members participating as judges at one of our two student poster sessions. This is a fun, informal way to connect and give feedback to students at Ohio State. Sign up and check out some of the promising work on display, engage with a few up-and-coming researchers, and pose a couple thought-provoking questions.
