CAFE Student Experiential Opportunities

CAFE provides three interdisciplinary student experiences to maximize broader impacts.

Graduate Research Associateships (GRA)

Each GRA will work within the CAFE research themes, some crossing themes, and all will serve as a mentor to an REU student. To increase the pool of diverse technical talent, Ohio State will use its existing partnership in the National GEM Consortium to access a database of top national underrepresented minority (URM) talent at the master’s and doctoral levels for both GRAs and GEM fellowships.

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)

REUs will focus on developing R&D skills crossing CAFE research themes. REUs will receive a stipend to conduct research during the academic year or summer session REUs will be supported and recruited through the Institute for Materials and Manufacturing Research (IMR) and the Ohio 5-OSU Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program. SURE recruitment and placement capabilities aim to increase the diverse talent from the College of Wooster, Denison University, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, and Ohio Wesleyan University.

Manufacturing Internship Opportunities (MIO)

A select number of summer MIOs for BS, MS, and PhD students at Intel fabs and labs may be available during this project. Students will have the ability to self-select as applicants into these opportunities, which are expected to be fully paid. For BS students, an internship can be taken in any non-REU summer after completing their first year. For graduate students, the internship can be taken in the summer prior to their first year, or it can be taken in subsequent summers in consultation with their faculty advisor.
