IMR Staffed Facilities

The Institute for Materials Research currently provides infrastructure support to two research facilities on The Ohio State University’s Columbus campus:

ENCOMM NanoSystems Laboratory (ENSL)

ENCOMM NanoSystems Laboratory (ENSL) is operated by the Center for Electronic/Magnetic Nanoscale Composite Multifunctional Materials (ENCOMM) with the goal of providing academic and industrial users with access to advanced material characterization and fabrication tools for research and development applications. Facilities at ENSL include: Dual Beam Focused Ion Beam/Scanning Electronic Microscope (FIB/SEM); SQUID Magnetometer; Atomic/Magnetic Force Microscope (AFM/MFM); Langmuir-Blodgett Trough (LBT); and X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD).

Nanotech West Laboratory (NTW)

Open to both academic and industrial users, Nanotech West Laboratory state-of-the-art facilities include a 6,000 square foot biohybrid laboratory and a 5,000 square foot class 100 cleanroom specializing in micro and nanoscale fabrication and material synthesis with a full-flow 100mm process capability. Primary capabilities include a Leica electron beam lithography system capable of beams less than 10nm at 20/50/100kV, a Picosun atomic layer deposition (ALD) capability, a dip-pen nanolithography system and a host of other facilities that support a variety of research programs. In early 2009, Nanotech West will be installing a new MOCVD system for epitaxy of III-V compounds based on As, P and Sb, which will be fully staffed and open access for internal and external users, with a special focus on advanced photovoltaics. These major facilities anchor the fully equipped cleanroom facilities, all of which are available to industry and university users and researchers. Nanotech West is currently home to three major research centers: an NSF Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center, the Wright Center for Photovoltaics Innovation and Commercialization (PVIC), and the Wright Center for Multifunctional Polymer Nanomaterials and Devices (CMPND). Nanotech West is the primary IMR location on OSU’s west campus and is a centerpiece for collaborative research in OSU’s materials community.
